About the Show
Bestselling British journalist and author Johann Hari joins The School of Life to present a radically different way of looking at depression. We are used to thinking of depression and anxiety as the brain malfunctioning, but Hari will argue that perhaps depression is a totally rational response to a modern way of life that seems a bit, well, mad. In this event, Hari will question what the real causes of depression might be.
In his new book Lost Connections: Uncovering The Real Causes of Depression and the Unexpected Solutions, Hari uses his personal experience with depression to break down the myths that surround it. Confronted by studies showing antidepressants are ineffective for most people, he went on to discover that the most common medical explanation for what causes depression and anxiety has never actually been proven.
In searching for the actual causes and cures for depression, Hari suggests that modern life has left us disconnected, isolated and alienated from meaningful work, from the natural world and from our fellow human beings.
Why is depression a growing health issue? How can we reconnect to the communities around us? What sort of projects might bring a much-needed sense of meaning and connection back into our lives?
This challenging and inspiring conversation event, conducted by journalist, Jill Stark, will see Hari discuss his broad research and fascinating case studies to provide concrete, evidence-based solutions to our mental health crisis.
