If you’ve ever experienced poor mental health you would have heard of ‘self-care’ (noun: The practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health). But if it was that easy, everyone would be doing it, right? Just how effective IS self care? And who is actually successfully practicing it? We’re on a mission to find out…

YGLAM (Australia’s longest running, youth-led theatre ensemble for LGBTIAQ+ young people) interviewed 100 queer young people in Moreland and asked them to share experiences of poor mental health, as well as providing any ‘self-care’ tips that are successful for them. These interviews formed the backbone of Self-Care: The Anti-musical, a promenade theatre piece where audiences are led through the bowels of hell, the depths of despair (think Disney’s Haunted Mansion, but weirder…). Throughout their journey they will encounter places of sanctuary (the laughter room, Beyoncé and colouring-in, a consensual cuddle puddle with pillows provided!), all based on successful self-help tools that are being used by queer young people today.

SC:TAM allows audiences to practice navigating ‘scary’ and ‘dangerous’ environments in ways that keep them safe and protected. You’ll be scared stiff, but we promise you’ll come out alive!

Warning: Contains mild coarse language, both sudden and sustained loud noises, high level of audience participation, potentially triggering content or themes, including Violence,Self Harm or Suicide,Staged Violence,Death,Mental Health,Simulated Blood, horror
