Read Medina’s Bio
Medina is an acclaimed deaf actress, director and consultant. Her career has spanned over 15 years across different mediums such as theatre, film and DVD. Her career as an actor within the deaf community started in 1995 with the Australian Theatre of the Deaf where she practiced her craft for the following 11 years. She then went on to work with the Freewheels Theatre, La Mama Theatre and Polygot Puppetry Theatre. Medina has worked in dramaturge and choreography with a range of deaf performers (including hip hoppers and poets) and directed countless productions, “Him, Her, I”, “Theatre Sports”, “I’ll Remember”, “Silent Monologues”, and “Monologue of a Deaf Woman” to name a few. Medina’s work has seen her contribute to major festivals and events such as the 2012 Gertrude Street Festival, 2012 Australian Deaf Games, the 2005 Deaflympics, Melbourne Fringe Festival, 2013 Midsumma and the St Kilda Film Festival. Medina has collaborated on large scale musical theatre productions, as a deaf consultant, such as Hate, Hair: The Rock Musical, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Billy Elliot, Mamma Mia, Mary Poppins, War Horse, Guys and Dolls, and many more. Susan is an accomplished Conference Level interpreter with over 30 years experience, specialising in musical theatre and International Sign. Susan’s career has seen her work across all genres of stage performance, in Australia and across the world. Some notable events and venues include: Wicked (2010 and 2014), Les Miserables, Walking with Dinosaurs, The Lion King, AFL Grand Final & Parade, Deaflympics 2005 & 2009, Midsumma Carnival, Australian Theatre of the Deaf (Tasmania Tour), Singin’ in the Rain, Annie, The Wizard of Oz, King Kong, Mamma Mia, Hair: The Rock Musical, War Horse, Mrs Browns’ Boys, Melbourne Fringe Festival, Melbourne Theatre Company’s Blithe Spirit and A Midnight Summer’s Dream; Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne Writer’s Festival, the Dalai Lama, Moomba, Melbourne Festival, National Gallery of Victoria, Circus Oz, Mardi Gras Party, Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s ‘Great Debate’, Kitty Flanagan, Em Rusciano, Cal Wilson, ABC’s “Angry Boys”, The Wiggles, Todd McKenney sings Peter Allen, Katie Noonan’s ‘Love Songs Circus’, Melbourne Queer Film Festival, Carols by Candlelight and much more! Susan has completed her Post Graduate Degree Auslan/ English at Macquarie University, Sydney and has sat on a number of theatre interpreting audition panels. Her favourite musicals are Wicked and The Lion King.
